ALBANY, Walter F. Smith, 65, of Westerlo died Saturday, March 19, 2011 at St. Peter's Hospital. Born in Albany, Walter is the son of the late Peter and Emma Smith. Walter was a 1964 graduate of Bethlehem Central High School and served in the US Army from 1965 to 1971. He was an equipment operator for the Albany County Highway Department in Westerlo, retiring in 2001. Walter was a member and union representative of CSEA. He was a past member of the Elsmere Fire Co., A and the Westerlo Fire Department. Walter loved spending time with his family and friends. His hobbies included antique cars and attending car shows. Walter is survived by his wife Beatrice Buell Smith; his children, Theodore Heim (Penny), Scott and Tammy Smith; his grandchildren, Garrett, Jennifer and Brandon Heim and a great granddaughter, Emerson Heim. Other survivors include his sister, Lois Smith, brother-in-law, Robert Glastetter and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Joan Glastetter and Margaret Jones and his brother, Peter Smith. Friends and relatives may call at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 from 4 to 6 PM and attend his funeral service at 6:00 PM. Spring interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont. Contributions in Walter's memory may be sent to the Westerlo Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 12, Westerlo, NY 12193.
