Susette Scofield Manley

1938 — April 16, 2023

It is with great sadness to report the passing or our beloved mother, Susette Scofield Manley, in the early morning hours of April 16, 2023.

She was born in Manhattan on April 5, 1938 to Jane W. and George Starr Scofield, IV.  Her biological father passed away in 1941 at a military training base in Tennessee.  Her step father Elijah N. Jones helped raise her since the age of five.  Raised in Greenwich, CT, she attended Greenwich Academy, Madeira School ’56 (Greenway, VA) and Garland Women’s College ’58 (Boston, MA).  As a child and young adult, Susette enjoyed her visits to Geneseo, NY to visit her grandmother, Sara Y. Scofield, and her relatives on the Wadsworth and Lockhart side.

She married Gerald B. Manley, Jr. in Boston.  Soon after, they moved to Oneonta, NY for her husband to finish college.  After, they soon settled in the Albany area and eventually moved to Delmar raising three children.  They were separated for a few years prior to his passing in 1979.  In her earlier years she volunteered at the Parsons School and Albany Medical Center, as well as belonging to the Junior League and University Club.

In her later years she enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.  She was incredibly humble and was quick to give a sweet compliment to others.  She enjoyed decorating her apartment in Glenmont, especially during the holidays.  She had a great eye for style and loved clothing, loved following current news events on TV, a good iced coffee, good conversation, lunch and drives around town with her son, Chip.  She took numerous trips with Chip over the years to Ogunquit, ME and Hyannis, MA, among others.  Her personality remained timeless and youthful even through health challenges.  She was a fun mother and will be forever missed.

She is survived by her son, Gerald Manley, III  (Chip) and his companion, Margo Berman, daughters, Catherine Hoffman of Conroe , TX, and Lisa Orcutt (Vincent) of Middle Grove, NY, two granddaughters, Susette and Ciera; brother, Michael Jones of Nevis , West Indies and sister Louise Jones of Austin, TX, as well as some extended relatives.

Susette put up a courageous 3 ½ month battle with COPD with very little complaining and much appreciation to the medical staff.  We would like to thank Drs. Rebecca Elliott, Gregg Gerety, Anthony Cagino and Dr. D for great care over the years.

She was a true “blessed breath of an angel” as she would say to her son.  She was the Angel.  RIP Mom.  We love you.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 5 to 7 pm at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar.  A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Monday, May 8 at Bethlehem Cemetery, Delmar.
