Stanley Sheridan Hansen, Jr. (aka Nicky) earned his heavenly wings on April 10, 2026. He is predeceased by his mother, Agnes Hansen, father, Stanley Sheridan Hansen, Sr., sister, Adriene Kim Hansen, mother-in-law Mickey Johnson and brother-in-law, Victor Lee Johnson, Sr.
He is survived by wife, Queenie of Delmar, NY and have been together for 35 years; Step-mother, Dorothy Hansen of Manhattan, NY; children Shannon Hansen (Suzy) of Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada and Stacey Hansen-Butler (Julian) of Frederick, Maryland; sister, Sheryl Kirkland of Houston, Texas; brother-in-law Dennis Johnson (Ann-Marie) of Dorchester, MA; sister-in-laws Denise Pope of Eastpoint GA; Juanita Johnson and Norma Johnson of Albany, NY; nine grandchildren, Kyree Hansen (Candice) of Martinsburg, West Virginia; Kaden Hansen of Frederick, Maryland; Salia Hansen, Shadan Hansen, Sezar Hansen, Sakylo Hansen, Syvaya Hansen, Sijora Hansen and Sage Hansen all from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Four great grandchildren, Adam Banire, Aliyy Banire, K'aziah Hansen, A'zariah Hansen all from Martinsburg, West Virginia; God-daughters Thaisa Salmond of Stone Mountain, GA; Melanie Jackson of Westport, CT and Regina Jackson of Albany, NY and a host of nieces, nephew and cousins.
Stanley and Queenie enjoyed traveling, especially cruising. They have set sailed on 41 cruises and traveled around the world visiting many of the Caribbean Islands, South Africa, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Mexico, Hawaii and many States in the U.S.
Stanley received his B.S. degree in Education in Social Studies from SUNY of Oneonta in 1975 and continued to earn his M.S. degree in Education from SUNY Brockport's Counseling Program in 1979.
Stanley served 28 years with the New York State Department of Education. He retired in 2017, as the Assistant Commissioner for the New York State Department of Education in the Office of Access, Equity and Community Engagement Services. During his tenure at the New York Department of Education, he served on the Review Restoration, Moral Character and Suspension cases of Licensed Professionals. He provided oversight for financial aid and the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP).
Stanley dedicated his life's work to preparing students and teachers for success, improving public education in the State of New York and ensuring that the underserved and underprivileged students have access to quality education and career training opportunities.
Stanley served on the Board of Special Olympics from 2001 through 2010. He was a member of the New York State Commission on National and Community Services from 2000 through 2017 where he served on the Executive, Nominations, and Strategic Planning committees. He served on the Board of Directors for Tri-State Consortium Opportunity in Higher Education (NY, NJ, and PA).
Stanley served on SUNY Oneonta Foundation Board of Director, including the Finance Committee as well as the Board Development and Governance Committee from 2009 through 2017. He was a loyal donor to several scholarships and student research funds.
In 2012, Stanley received SUNY Oneonta's Educational Opportunity Program Alumni Network Outstanding Achievement Award and was inducted into SUNY Oneonta's EOP Hall of Fame. He was recognized as a SUNY Oneonta Alumni of Distinction Honoree for his professional, achievements and public service.
Stanley has been a mediator and arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, the Rochester Center for Dispute Settlement and was a Trainer for the National Coalition Building Institute in Washington, DC.
In 2014, Stanley was as a Keynote Speaker for New York State School Counselor Association Conference; in 2016, he was a Keynote Speaker for Rockland 21st Century Collaborative for Children and Youth; and in 2017, he was a Keynote Speaker for SUNY Oneonta, Remembering Dr. Martin, Luther King, Jr.: Looking Back-Seeing Forward-Realizing Your Dream.
He provided oversight, leadership and direction for New York State as the first State to accept President's Obama's My Brother's Keeper Initiative.
Stanley was a founding board member of Team Esteem on the Hill, nonprofit dedicating to strengthening communities in the Albany area.
He worked at the YMCA in Rochester, New York for nine years and served as Youth Services Director, Program Director and Executive Director.
Stanley was an active member of Metropolitan New Testament Mission Baptist Church in Albany, NY serving on the Policy and Procedures Group and a member of the Laymen's Ministry. He served on the Board of Directors of Idlewild Terrace Housing Development Fund Corporation, a senior housing project development by the Church.
Stanley received the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Leadership in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring for STEP and CSTEP programs. He received two Lifetime achievement awards: 2018 Liberty Partnership and 2018 Tri-State Consortium (NY, NJ, PA). Stanley also received a 2018 Golden Alumni Honoree Award at the 50th EOP event in Buffalo, NY.
In the 72 years of Stanley's life here on earth, he has accomplished so much for humanity. His career speaks for itself. There is no telling how many lives have been changed due to his tireless work and dedication. He is a giant in the field of educational opportunity programs and has no doubt paved a path for the success of thousands of students across the New York State.
A funeral service will be held 11 am Monday, May 4 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 105 Second St., Albany. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery, Delmar.
