DELMAR- Richard Cromwell Jackson, aged 88, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2016.
Born on April 27, 1927 in Albany, NY, he was the son of Walter and Mabel (Moxley) Jackson.
He attended school at Ravena and CBA and graduated from Albany High School. He served with honor as an Army private in Italy during World War II. Following his discharge he held various jobs until he met and married his wife, Willa Hellwig Jackson.
Richard began his career with the New York State Department of Corrections in 1954 as a Corrections Officer. He served in several state prisons, retiring in 1989 as Deputy Superintendent of Programs at the Auburn Correctional Facility. He was also a Police Officer for the Village of Ravena and a State Park Police Officer at Thacher and Saratoga State Parks. He was particularly proud of his assignment to assist in implementing the security for the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, NY. Richard was always active in the communities in which he lived. He served on various committees and boards for the Village of Ravena and the Towns of Coeymans and Owasco. He also volunteered his time to the Auburn Community Federal Credit Union.
Richard and Willa were married for 64 years. They moved to Ravena in 1957 where they raised their children. Following his promotion to Deputy Superintendent they moved to Owasco, NY.
Following his retirement he enjoyed planning and preparing the daily meals. He was an avid golfer and played in summer leagues well into his 80's. Richard fully embraced the sarcastic Jackson sense of humor, which he handed down to his daughters, and his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his daughters Pamela Jackson, Theresa Jackson (husband Timothy Nugent), Julie Jackson, Christine (Darren) Miller, and his grandchildren, Kellen Nugent, Christine Jackson and Tate and Georgia Miller.
Predeceasing him are his brothers Willard and Walter, and his sisters Ellen Engel, Lois Bamer and Joyce Cunningham.
The family will honor Richard at the Applebee Funeral Home, Delmar, NY., on Wednesday, March 16, from 4 to 7pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11am in the Funeral Home.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the Community Hospice team of Saratoga Springs for the loving care given to Richard.
