It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorraine Ann Whalen, who left this world on June 19, 2025, in Vail, Arizona. Born on April 18, 1940, in Albany, New York, to her Italian parents, Nicholas and Victoria Ippolito. Lorraine was a shining beacon of kindness and empathy throughout her life.
Lorraine dedicated over three decades to educating young minds as a middle school science teacher. She was revered for her outstanding teaching abilities, particularly her commitment to working with the district's more challenging students. Her compassionate nature and strong values significantly influenced the lives of her students, leaving a positive mark that many carried into their adulthood. The respect she earned from both students and faculty during her career is a testament to her dedication and passion for education.
An accomplished educator, Lorraine earned a Master’s degree in Education and was recognized as an exceptional teacher throughout the country. Her legacy extends beyond her academic contributions, as she volunteered frequently for underserved communities and generously supported charities aimed at helping those in need.
Lorraine was known for her warm personality, characterized by her loyal and courageous spirit. Her ability to find joy in life's moments was evident to all who knew her. She possessed a great sense of humor and a love for good thrillers, whether through books or films. Lorraine was also very proud of her Italian heritage and upbringing. The laughter she shared with family and friends will be cherished forever.
Family was immensely important to Lorraine. She is survived by her three sons, Robert, Michael, and John, and her daughter-in-law, Katty, along with her grandson, Andrew. Lorraine's never-ending support and encouragement will remain an enduring memory for all her loved ones.
Her legacy of care, compassion, and commitment will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. Lorraine Ann Whalen will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts and memories of her family, friends, and former students.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 am on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
