Karl H. Gohlke, Jr. age 82, died on Friday, August 4, 2023 at home with his family by his side.
Born in Brooklyn, NY he was the son of the late Karl and Hazael Dowling Gohlke. He grew up in Garden City where he met his wife, Elizabeth. Karl attended the University of Michigan where he earned his Master’s in Social Work.
Karl will be remembered as an advocate; and man who readily championed for the underdog. It was how he lived his life personally and professionally. Karl believed in dignity for everybody, whether it was for inmates during his long career in corrections, as a union steward for PEF, or to the residents and staff at Avila during his retirement years. Karl was an Eagle Scout and was very involved in scouting as a leader for both his daughter and granddaughters. He was on the board of the Girl Scouts of Northeastern NY and was involved in the development and retention Camp Little Notch, as a separate entity from the Girl Scouts. Karl was an active member of the friends of Bill W for many years. Before retiring, Karl held several positions in Program Administration for the NY State Dept. of Corrections for over 25 years.
Karl was the beloved husband of Elizabeth Reule Gohlke for 59 years; loving father of Leslie Gohlke and her wife, Cindy Burola and Martha Gohlke and her fiancé Tom Behanna; brother of Mary Metzger and cherished grandfather of Ali, Sarah, Riley, Liam and Charlie.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, August 12
th
at 11:00am at the Avila Retirement Community, 100 White Pine Drive, Albany, NY 12203.
