Karen Scalzo Tierney, 78, of Slingerlands, NY passed away on Friday, May, 29.
Karen was the definition of strength, light, and love. She cherished all things family and friends. Her laugh was infectious, and her dance moves signature. She loved her role as “The Oldest” of four siblings, and shared the closest of bonds with her parents. She collected friends through every chapter of life, holding each relationship dear. Her high-school sweetheart became her husband of 56 years. Together, they built a welcoming home, hosting gatherings big and small. Karen loved good music, a big bonfire, and stargazing until dawn.
Karen’s favorite roles were mother and grandmother. She effortlessly was both guardian and playmate for her children. As they grew, she was their consummate champion, celebrating every step to adulthood. Karen’s five grandchildren were her favorite humans, and were forever bathed in the glow of her adoration. Their invitations to do, watch, or play anything were always answered with an enthusiastic “yes!”
In the last few years Karen took on the role of caretaker, as her “Constant Companion” suffered from Alzheimer’s. She never left his side, while continuing to be the family matriarch.
Karen is survived by her husband, Bill Tierney, two children, Amy Hayes (Chris), and Bill Tierney (Liz), her five grandchildren: Benjamin Hayes, Emily Tierney, Jane Tierney, Claire Hayes, and Sophia Tierney. She is also survived by her three siblings, Anthony M. Scalzo (Debbi), Maryellen Scalzo Bruno (Dennis), and Jeannie Scalzo (Mitchell Hymowitz).
Karen was one of a kind! Everyone who knew her was touched in an indelible way. May her memory live on in her family and friends.
