Joseph W. McCarthy

Joseph W. McCarthy, 88, passed away at home on Friday, September 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on June 18, 1938, in Fillmore, NY, he was the son of the late William and Ethel McCarthy. Joseph honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1961 to 1965. He went on to build a long career as a New York State employee, working for several state agencies before retiring from New York State OGS in 1995. He also valued education throughout his life, receiving his Bachelor of Science from Canisius College in Buffalo and his Master of Public Administration from the University at Albany.

He was a man of steady commitments and generous involvement in the lives of others. At St. Thomas the Apostle Church, he served as a Boy Scouts troop leader, and when his children were young, he coached Little League. In quieter moments, he enjoyed Sudoku and crossword puzzles, was an avid reader, and looked forward to mornings spent with his coffee group. He also liked doing genealogy, an interest well suited to his thoughtful and curious nature.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marie Ann McCarthy. He also leaves his children and their families: Joseph William McCarthy, Jr. (Kelly), Kathleen Marie Romo, Margaret Ann Selig (Sam), John Robert McCarthy (Lisa Daniels) and William Keeton McCarthy II (Danielle) and ten grandchildren. He was the brother of Helen Brogan (the late David) and the late Kathleen Zuccaro and Ann Brownell (Tom).

The family will receive visitors on Friday, October 2, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place, Delmar. Those who wish may send a remembrance in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association (Alzheimer's Association /northeasternny).
