John C. “Jack” Selig, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026 in Guilderland, NY, at the age of 96. Born on September 24, 1929 to the late William Selig and Clara Bishop Selig Cox.
Jack’s early years began in Guilderland, where he attended Altamont High School and graduated with the class of 1946. In his later years, Jack was involved with and President of the Altamont High School Alumni Association. Jack honorably served in the United States Army during two periods, from 1949 to 1952 and again from 1952 to 1955 achieving the rank of Sargent. His time with the Army instilled a sense of discipline and patriotism that would shape his character for years to come. He proudly played third base for the Carlisle Barracks baseball team and was one of their players at the Second Army Championship Playoff in August 1950. As a proud member of American Legion Post #1040, Jack continued to honor the spirit of service, finding connection among fellow veterans.
After his military service, Jack embarked on a distinguished professional career. He held the position of Vice President at W.H. Smith Paper Company, where his leadership and integrity left a lasting impression. Later, he contributed his skills and knowledge to the NYS Office of General Services as a purchasing agent.
Jack was a woodworker by hobby, creating and fixing things with his hands. He was "Mr. Fix It" taking thrown away objects and giving them new life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping —having a seasonal camping spot in Warrensburg for many years, that provided cherished memories with family and friends. Jack also found joy in bowling as a member of local bowling leagues and even achieved the perfect 300 game twice.
Above all else, Jack was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Barbara Selig, who shared in the joys and challenges of a long and fruitful marriage. He leaves behind his children; Kathleen of Delmar, Heather (Robert) Burns of Selkirk and William (Barbara) of Seattle. Granddaughter Ashlyn Burns (Cody Sagendorph) and Grandson Zackery Burns (Britney Berry) and their son, Jack's great-grandson Weston Burns. As well as, many nieces and nephews.
Jack was predeceased by his son, Robert, his sister, Doris, and his brothers, William (Dorothy) and Worthy (Joan) Cox. Their memories remained ever close to his heart.
A visitation honoring the life of Jack will be held on July 16, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar, NY 12054. Family, friends, and all whose lives Jack touched are welcome to pay their respects and celebrate the legacy of a remarkable man. There will be no formal service per Jack's request.
The memory of John C. “Jack” Selig will endure through the lives he touched and the values he embodied. He will be dearly missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.
