Joan Marie Whitten

Joan Marie Whitten (Briggs), 87, of Glens Falls, NY peacefully passed away on September 27, 2025 surrounded by family.

Joan was born on May 25, 1938, in Minerva, NY to the late Edwin Briggs and Mary Briggs (Lynn). Joan, alongside her husband Peter, believed her true calling by God was to serve others. Her career began as an educator, however, her primary gift to this world was in fostering numerous babies and young children, and in doing so gave them a start to life that was filled with love. Her ability to also invest fully in her children, and grandchildren (Nana, to them) was astounding. Joan was a strong woman and had a determined spirit, and despite any medical setbacks, truly believed that the only way to live was by living for others. While raising three strong daughters, her love was great enough to share with all who were fortunate to spend time with her. Joan had a love for dance and song, and you would often find her dancing in Worship or playing beautiful songs at her piano. Her passion also included watching and cheering on her children and grandchildren in all their activities. She and the love of her life, Peter, had just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Joan’s surviving relatives are her husband Peter; her brother, Craig Briggs; her three children; Kelly Hughes and her husband Randy, Erin Hamlen and her husband Tim, and Lisa Whitten; four grandchildren, Connor, Brendan and his fiancé Madison, Brody, and Alli; and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Her impact on all those who she touched through her warmth, kindness, giving nature, and love is her legacy for others to follow. The family would like to extend an invitation to a Celebration of Life at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 2 immediately followed by a reception at Pine Knolls Alliance Church, 614 Gansevoort Rd, South Glens Falls, NY.
