James Brate

CLARKSVILLE - James E. Brate, Sr., 97, of Clarksville died on Thursday, August 4, 2011 at the St. Peter's Hospice Inn. Born in Albany on April 28, 1914, he was the son of the late Elmer and Anna (McArdle) Brate. He worked in construction for many years and had been a member of Laborers Union Local #190. He also owned Brate's Grocery in Clarksville for many years. Mr. Brate was the husband of the late Ellen A. (Warner) Brate and Bernadette (Cyr) Brate; father of the late Bernadette Askew; grandfather of the late Daniel J. Martin; and brother of the late Harriet Lyman, Catherine Smith and August Brate. Survivors include children, Donna Martin and Joan Plunkett, both of Clarksville, James E. Brate, Jr. of Florida, George Brate of Westerlo, Jacqueline Bauer of South Carolina and Patricia Erickson of Georgia; brother, Daniel Brate of Westerlo; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday from 4 to 7 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday at Onesquethaw Cemetery, Clarksville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to God's Heart of Refuge, 339 Delaware Ave., Delmar, NY 12054 or Clarksville Community Church, P.O. Box F, Clarksville, NY 12041.
