Irving Van Woert, Jr. MD

1924 — November 6, 2014

DELMAR - Irving Van Woert, Jr. MD, of Delmar passed away on Thursday, November 6, 2014 with his three daughters at his bedside. He was born May 15, 1924 to Harriet Holmes Van Woert and Irving Van Woert, Sr., MD. A native of Delmar, he was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Priscilla Van Woert, in 2005 and recently his sister, Marian Van Woert, whose care he guided. Dr. Irving Van Woert was a graduate of the Albany Academy (1942), Williams College and the Albany Medical College in 1948. His internship was in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His Radiology training began for one year at Albany Medical Center (1949-1950) and was completed at John's Hopkins University Hospital (1950-1952.) Following his Residency, he served in the Public Health Service from 1952-1954 in El Paso, Texas as part of the doctor draft. This is where he developed his love for Mexican food. He began his career as Assistant Professor of Radiology at the Albany Medical Center in 1954. In April 1959, he opened one of the first community medical imaging centers, in Delmar, NY, and practiced there until he retired in 1989. He was a staff radiologist at the former Child's Hospital in Albany from 1961-1967 and later served as Chief of Radiology there commencing in 1977, while still maintaining his private practice. A sports enthusiast, he was a diehard Pittsburgh Pirates fan and a staunch NY Giants follower. He once threw out the first ball at a Major League Pittsburgh Pirates game as he was a loyal booster club member spending some winters in Bradenton, Florida to watch Spring Training. In 1971, he helped create the Bethlehem Tomboys Girls Softball League and coached for several years. He was a great promoter of women playing sports. He is survived by his daughters, Joanne (Jim Connolly) of Voorheesville, Judith (Paul Connolly) of Delmar, and Janet (Derek Ratliff) of Cooperstown. He was Papa to eleven adoring grandchildren: Joseph Irving, James, Margaret Rose, Daniel, Michael, Bridget, Matthew, Kathleen, Kristin, Stephen and Juliette. His positive and kind disposition was and will be an inspiration to his family. He was a wonderful father. His easy nature allowed him to make friends wherever he went. We will miss him dearly. The family wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to Dr. Lawrence Garbo and his staff at NYOH for their excellent medical care, and to the entire staff at the Terrace at Beverwyck for creating a "home" with excellent care, cuisine and activities. The family also wishes to thank the St Peters Hospital staff on 3 Gabrilove, the ICU, and at the St Peters Rehab Center for their superb and compassionate care. A funeral service will be held at 11 am at the Delmar Reformed Church at 386 Delaware Ave in Delmar on Tuesday, November 11, 2014. A calling hour will begin at the church at 10 am on Tuesday, November 11th. A reception at the Delmar Reformed Church will follow the burial at the Bethlehem Cemetery. All are invited to attend.
