Gianna L. Ida-Smith, beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, and dear friend, passed away on July 7th, 2026 at the age of 15 years old after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on February 23, 2011, in Niskayuna, NY, Gianna’s radiant spirit and limitless love for those around her made a lasting impact on all who knew her.

Gianna was an exceptional student at Bethlehem Central High School where she carried high honors. Her dedication to her studies was matched by her passion for music as she played the trumpet in the school band, sharing her talent and joy for music with her peers. Outside the classroom, Gianna was a powerhouse on the basketball court. A year-round traveling basketball player for several teams in the Albany area, her energy and enthusiasm inspired her teammates and coaches alike. Gianna also nurtured a deep passion for collecting sneakers, always delighting in each new addition to her treasured collection.

She shared an extraordinary bond with her mother, Becki. The two were truly inseparable, finding joy in simple pleasures—road trips together and spontaneous McDonald’s runs for a McFlurry. Gianna’s devotion to her family was unwavering. She loved nothing more than being surrounded by them, cherishing every moment and radiating warmth and affection that was felt by everyone in her life.

Those who knew Gianna remember a funny, kindhearted girl who touched everyone she met. She was a jokester, always ready with a witty comeback when someone would tease her, and her sense of humor remained strong even during her illness. Gianna faced every challenge with remarkable optimism, never giving up or complaining. She fought hard, keeping her trademark smile and bright outlook through every hurdle. During her illness, she became an avid LEGO builder, finding creativity and resilience in each new project and demonstrating her ever-present determination and imagination.

Gianna leaves behind a family whose lives were made infinitely richer by her love: her devoted mother, Becki Ida; her caring father, Christopher Smith; her cherished brothers, Cameron Caldwell, Iziah Smith and Chrisiah Smith; her loving maternal grandparents, Brent and Mary Ann Ida and beloved paternal grandparents, Etta Smith and William (Judy) Smith; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends who will miss her laughter, her quick wit, and the light she brought to every room.

The memory of Gianna’s bright spirit, unwavering courage, and the joy she brought to her family and friends will live on in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.

Gianna's family will receive visitors on Monday, July 13th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar. All friends and family are encouraged to attend and celebrate Gianna.

Following the visitation, there will be a reception at Martel's Restaurant at Capital Hills, 65 O'Neil Rd., Albany from 7:30 to 10:30 pm where the family would love to have everyone attend to share memories and stories of how Gianna touched their lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to your local animal shelter, the Bethlehem Girls Basketball Booster Club or the Bethlehem Girls Basketball Club (B.G.B.C.).
