DELMAR – Jerry Schimanski, 84, passed away on Monday, April 10, 2023 with his wife of 62 years, Kathryn by his side. He will be deeply missed by his three children and grandchildren: Mary Pierce (David) and their children Kelsey (Sam), Sam (Meg), and Jack (Jess); James Schimanski (Carolyn) and their children Maggie, Katie, and Tristan (Carly); and Lori McDermott (Jim) and their children Shawn and Kelly; and his great grandchild Russell Wyman.
Jerry was born on November 13, 1938, the second son of the late Harry and Anna (Makowski) Schimanski. He was predeceased by his brothers Ronald, Thomas, and William. Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Jerry and his family moved to Delmar in 1974. He continued to work for more than 40 years for Combined Life Insurance Company. He was devoted to his family and fully supported and encouraged his children in all their endeavors.
After he retired, Jerry turned his focus to golf and working on his handicap as an active member of Normanside Country Club. While his handicap only improved slightly, he fostered many close friendships. Jerry never missed an opportunity to support his community and spent his time volunteering at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, his HOA board, and Bethlehem Senior Projects, where his personality and attention to detail made him a favorite of the folks he helped transport.
Friends and family are invited to visit on Friday April 14th from 5 to 7 pm at Applebee Funeral home 403 Kenwood Avenue in Delmar. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday April 15th at 9:30 am at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Place in Delmar. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery on Rt. 9W in Glenmont.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jerry’s name to Bethlehem Senior Projects at https://www.bethlehemseniorproject.org/ or your favorite charity.
