George Schmitt

1947 — October 22, 2011

DELMAR - George A. Schmitt, 64, of Delmar died on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at St. Peter's Hospital after a short illness. Born in Bronx, NY on January 12, 1947, he was the son of the late George and Ethel Schmitt and brother of the late Robert Schmitt. He is survived by his longtime love, Ellen Meckler; her children, Rochelle Kalb (Matthew) and their children, Jordan, Heather and Justin, of Las Vegas, NV, and Beth Polasky and her son, Ryan of Tampa, FL; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Schmitt of Delmar and her sons, Andrew Schmitt of Delmar and Jeffery Bielefeld of Oregon. George had worked as an aeronautical engineer for Grumman Aviation, designing the fuselage for the F-14 Tomcat and helping to design the fuselage of the F-111 Aardvark. He was part of the team that designed a lunar module that landed on the moon during one of the Apollo missions. A document that was left on the moon by the astronauts during that mission bears his name. George later worked for Verizon and, after a brief retirement, had worked at Home Depot in Albany for the past eight years. He will be remembered as a warm, loving and giving man and for his great sense of humor. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 5 to 7 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. A service will follow the calling hours at 7 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Albany, NY 12211.
