DELMAR -Edward Carlton, 99, passed away at St. Peter's Hospice Inn on Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Born July 17, 1914 in Langley Park, County Durham, England, Edward was the youngest of four children. His family moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1921. Edward was an architectural engineer, artist, avid golfer, and great storyteller. He attended The Art Institute of Chicago and Chicago Technical College, where he earned a B.S. in architectural engineering, and he took graduate courses in urban planning at Illinois Institute of Technology. During World War II, Edward served his country as a Sea Bee in Point Barrow, Alaska. In 1946, Edward married the love of his life, Mary Jane McDonald. A registered civil engineer and charter member of the American Institute of Certified Planners, Edward was employed by the federal government for 34 years as an urban transportation planning engineer. He was a long-time member of Normanside Country Club. Edward's paintings can be found in private collections from Florida to Maine. He was a 51- year communicant of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Delmar, and he attended St. George's Church in Ft. George, FL after retiring. Predeceased by his son Malcolm, Edward is survived by his wife Mary Jane; their son McDonald and his wife Kathleen; grandson Ian and his wife Teresa; and his two great grandchildren Elizabeth and Lily. Edward leaves behind countless stories that he shared with friends and family right up to the end of his long and active life. The Carlton family would like to express its thanks for the kindness and caring of the staff and volunteers at The Hospice Inn. A memorial service will be held 10 am Friday, July 26th at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 16 Elsmere Ave., Delmar. There will be no calling hours.
