David L. Stephany

Stephany, David L., 68, died peacefully at the Delmar Center (formerly Good Samaritan) August 30, 2026. Dave grew up in Delmar, NY. After graduating from Bethlehem Central High School in 1977 he served many years in the Navy, before ending his 30+ years in the military (active and reserve) with a short stint as a reservist in the Air Force. He loved being aboard ship (USS Hepburn) and travelled extensively. He was awarded the Sea Service Deployed Ribbons (2), a Navy Expeditionary Medal, and a Humanitarian Service Medal. David also worked for the state of New York for over 30 years as an engineer/boiler technician before retiring.

David was also a gifted artist creating memorable, surreal images with pen and ink. He also painted with oils and acrylic. His love of ships were reflected in many of his early paintings. He loved music, fostered by a mother he adored, who had a beautiful voice.  He loved animals and donated to many protective organizations. David especially loved his cats, Professor and Chewy. Humor played a large part in his life as well. Throughout the years, he loved to banter with his brother Tom, and both would laugh like crazy, as well as those around them, as they’d do impersonations of people and other characters such as Beavis and Butthead. As a kid, he had a poster on his bedroom wall from the Easy Rider movie that would later inspire his owning several motorcycles over the years, taking many trips across country with other riders. As for his dad, although he didn't have a well- established relationship, he didn't hesitate to provide him a home and to help him live out his years the best he could for the remainder of his dad's life. David struggled with alcohol throughout his life, and though it was hard to see at times, he loved and cared deeply. Those who knew him well, understood that. And while long-term sobriety was not to be, he made many friends in the AA community and often reflected on their importance in his life.

David is survived by his son, David Dakotah Stephany and grandson Colton, of Madisonville, TN, brothers Charles Dunphy of Colonie, NY, Joe Rose of Green Bay WI, David DiMezza, Latham, NY, and sister Marie Luthringer of Athens, NY. David is predeceased by his father Charles Stephany, mother Ruth Carter, brothers Richard Dunphy, and Thomas Stephany. Not to be forgotten, his beloved cats, the Professor and Chewy.

No service is planned. A memorial gathering is tentatively scheduled for next spring.
