DELMAR – Carole R. Portmann, 79, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter's Hospital after a short bout with cancer. Born in New York City on April 17, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Edna (Calhoun) Roman. She received a degree in Chemistry from St. Francis College, Loretto, PA and was employed as a chemist for two pharmaceutical companies. After moving to Delmar and raising a family, she worked as executive secretary for the NYS Senate prior to her retirement. Carole had been a very active member of the Delmar Progress Club, was a dedicated volunteer in the community and at local hospitals, and was a devoted communicant of St Thomas the Apostle Church. Survivors include her husband, Glenn A. Portmann; four children, Elizabeth M. Portmann (Sam), Robert W. Portmann (Jeanmarie), Gregory J. Portmann (Susie) and David D. Portmann (Dusti); four grandchildren, Baila, Clio, Lillian and Matthew; three step-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Ryne and Danielle; a sister, Roberta Glisson and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Henry Roman. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday, September 13th from 3 to 5 pm at the Applebee Funeral Home, 403 Kenwood Ave, Delmar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:30 am Monday, September 14th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 35 Adams Pl., Delmar. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
