Born on December 5, 1942, in Cantano, Puerto Rico, Carmelo’s journey through life was marked by a deep love for family and an unyielding spirit of creativity and resourcefulness.
Carmelo served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, stationed in Okinawa, where he displayed tremendous bravery and commitment to his country. His service shaped the man he became, instilling values of dedication and perseverance that resonated throughout his life.
A true jack of all trades, Carmelo was known for his remarkable ability to fix and build just about anything. His hands crafted not only structures but also cherished garments, as he took the time to learn sewing and create clothing that was both functional and personal. His passions extended into the garden, where he cultivated beauty and life, his love for nature blossoming in every plant he tended. Writing poetry was another of his beloved hobbies, allowing him to express his thoughts and feelings.
Carmelo was also a man who cherished music, often showcasing his love for singing. Friends and family can still hear his melodies echoing in their hearts, reminding them of the joyful spirit he shared. And, through it all, his unwavering loyalty to the New York Yankees was a hallmark of his character, bringing him joy and camaraderie with fellow fans.
He is survived by his devoted daughters, Eva Marie, Arlene, and Marilyn, who carry forward his legacy of love and resilience. His grandchildren - Xavier, Jr., Christine, Oswaldo, David Anthony, Jason Christopher and Sofia - along with his great-grandchildren, Isaiah Michael and Nova Jon, will forever treasure the moments they shared with him, the lessons he imparted, and the laughter that filled their gatherings.
Carmelo was predeceased by his loving parents, Felipa Cancel Rubero and Carmelo Valentin Castillo, who nurtured his spirit and instilled in him the values that would guide him throughout his life.
As we remember Carmelo, let us hold dearly to his famous words, "Me, myself and I," a reminder that he embraced his individuality and taught those around him to appreciate their own unique journeys.
