DELMAR - Anna M. Abaray died Friday, February 23rd, at Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany at age 97. She died of complications of pneumonia.
Anna was born Anna Oleynak on June 11, 1920 in Czechoslovakia. She immigrated to the United States at age 16 in 1937. She worked as a domestic at the home of William L. Carson, JP Morgan corporate attorney, on Long Island for 12 years. She became an American citizen in 1942.
She married Michael Abaray in New York City in 1947. They lived in Floral Park, Nassau County, for forty years. Her husband died in 1980, and Anna later moved to Delmar, and then Albany, to be closer to her children and grandchildren.
Anna is survived by her daughters Elaine J. Abaray of Albany, Anna Jane Abaray and her husband Peter Hackman of Delmar; her grandchildren Kenneth Hackman of Delmar, Christine Hackman, Ph.D. of San Luis Obispo, California; Thomas Hackman and his wife Ada Cornell of Takoma Park, Maryland; and her great-grandchild Flora Cornell Hackman.
A funeral mass for Anna will be held on Wednesday, February 28 at 10:00am, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Delmar. The family will greet visitors prior to the mass beginning at 9am. A reception will follow the church service. Interment will be at Holy Rood Cemetery in Old Westbury, at a later date.
